Oncology Social Worker
Having a cancer diagnosis impacts not only the person with cancer, but also their network of family and friends. Often there is shock, disbelief and confusion when one is told they have cancer. A cancer diagnosis may also bring challenges including emotional distress, care needs, transportation needs, and financial concerns. As part of Centra's multidisciplinary approach to medical care, a dedicated oncology social worker is available to assist with many of the needs one encounters throughout a journey with cancer.
Often the greatest concern listed by people going through cancer treatment is the financial impact of the disease on their lives. The oncology social worker may be able to provide information about applying for benefits including but not limited to Disability and Medicaid when appropriate. The social worker also may be able to provide resources for assistance with durable medical equipment, nutritional supplements, medications, and transportation to medical appointments.
Additionally, the social worker is able to assist with referrals for transitional needs. These include care in the home such as home health care, hospice care, personal care aides, private sitters, or home delivered meals. Other transitional needs may include outpatient therapies for rehabilitation and durable medical equipment. The social worker may discuss these options with patients and families, and assist with obtaining these resources as ordered by the physician.
Aside from addressing financial concerns, transitional needs, and care needs, the oncology social worker most importantly is an interested, compassionate listener. Coping with the different stages of a cancer journey may be emotionally draining. The oncology social worker is a licensed, master's degree prepared professional who is specifically trained to help patients and families recognize and cope with the emotional issues related to the cancer experience. Aside from meeting with patients and families individually, the oncology social worker also leads a cancer survivorship group as well as a caregiver support group.
If you would like to talk with the oncology social worker or arrange an appointment, please call 434-200-6067.
